Turtle Lodge

Tortuga Lodges & Gardens starts at our river dock. Sit, relax, enjoy the view. To get the essence of Tortuguero you must tune in with the water, you are immersed in a world where land and water merge and became one.

The Tortuguero National Park is 51,870 acres and one of the last large areas of tropical rain forest in Central America. Monkeys, storks, and river otters can often be seen along the water in addition to more than 300 species of birds.

During the season (June through October) the highlight of your trip to Tortuguero is actually standing a few feet from a 300 pound Green Sea Turtle while she lays 80-100 eggs, covers up her nest, perhaps digs a false nest to throw off predators, and, finally, after more than an hour, returns to the sea. Tortuguero is conservation. In 1962 the late Dr. Archie Carr began to study and tag the thousands of Atlantic green sea turtles that every year from June through October come to Tortuguero Beach to lay their eggs.

Set on the black water canals of Tortuguero, Tortuga Lodge's dinning room and bar feature a shaded verandah; the dining has been called "the best in Costa Rica" by many of our guests. Tortuga Lodge's restaurant starts at the river dock and reluctantly moves inland.

Tortuga Lodges main reason for existence is to provide excellent accommodations for people interested in experiencing Tortuguero National Park.

Tortuga Lodge Hammock House. The people of Tortuguero are more relaxed than anyplace else in Costa Rica. If you get so laid back at Tortuga Lodge that you fall back, you're welcome to fall into a comfortable hammock.

The Swimming Pool recently added won the International Design Award of Excellence—Silver Medal 2000, chosen by the National Spa & Pool Institute for freeform pool design outside of the U.S. and Canada. Designed to blend into the river environment, the pool features an environmentally friendly purification system that uses an undetectable amount of salt.

All rooms at Tortuga Lodge have as much window area as walls. Indoors and outdoors loose their meaning at the lodge.
