Rio Indio Lodge

The Rio Indio Lodge, a $2.1 million dollar sport fishing and ecotourism resort near the mouth of the San Juan River, just across the Costa Rican border in Southeastern Nicaragua, is the first operation to take serious aim at that country's fantastic sportfishing and ecotour markets.

The waters surrounding the new lodge offer a true virgin fishery. Tarpon and snook abound just outside the river mouths.

Guapote (rainbow bass) and other fighting jungle gamefish can be found within seldom-fished rivers, lagoons and backwaters of the San Juan river system. Anglers can fish the backwater sloughs and rivers for snook, rainbow bass (known locally as guapote), machaca and mojarra (a supercharged bluegill), or cross the river mouths into the Caribbean on secure 20-foot ocean craft to battle tarpon in the 50-160 pound range, jack crevalle, tuna and dorado.

This area is known for its abundant wildlife and exotic birds, and is Nicaragua's most important National Park bordering Costa Rica. Visiting anglers have over 100 miles of waterways, lagoons and areas with abundant fishing. This lodge was developed by Dr. Alfredo Lopez, a well-respected Costa Rican physician and Central American fishing and ecotour pioneer. The Rio Indio Lodge can accommodate 20 anglers and 52 non-angling guests.

Rio Indio Lodge has a main lodge and restaurant complex, guestrooms, a swimming pool and a spa. The Lodge features a "nature cottages" set in the jungle (for those who want to really get in touch with the local flora and fauna), a remote tent camp, a conservation study center, and a re-created Rama Indian Village, depicting the lifestyle of the region's indigenous residents of the area.

Bird watching, kayaking, horseback riding and a comprehensive natural history program headed by qualified naturalist guides are available to non-angling guests.

Fishing packages are tailored to the clients' request. A typical package includes van pick-up to an excellent San José hotel from the international airport on arrival day in Costa Rica, van transfer to the domestic terminal for an early morning commercial or charter flight to Barra del Colorado the next day, boat transportation to Rio Indio Lodge, lodging and all meals there, the number of full days fishing requested, boat transportation to Barra del Colorado for the flight back to San José, and any subsequent domestic arrangements.

Ask the Travel Web for details of this exciting new fishing destination.
